There is nothing in the fiber that is Microsoft which will allow them
to promote a competitive platform in any way which will deminish
their position with one of their two monopolies. In this case it is
Microsoft Office.

A well implemented ODF supporting version of MS Office will harm
their control of that product by validating the ODF file format. ODF
is out of their control and therefore a threat to their 2nd largest
revenue stream, MS Office. And the story linked says how they plan
to burn the users and color ODF as a difficult to use and incapable
file format.

I can only guess but maybe Sun's ODF plugin is getting traction and
they know people will take what's handed to them instead of what is
the best for them. This gives them back control of what the users ODF
experience is and again, the groklaw article explains their motives.
Also, Sun's plugin supports all versions of MS Office back to MS Office
2000. That is a threat to sales of MS Office 2007.
