Gosh, that's a bit harsh.  Usually the "freeze X" is just a pointer grab.
You should be able to press Left-ALT-Ctrl-F1, log in, and kill firefox or
whatever.  Worst case would be a need to kill the X server.

If X itself is freezing, you have a buggy X server, and that should be
fixed.  You should still be able to log in remotely, but it might be harder
to recover from.
