I think something isn't turned on.  This isn't much help, but when I
look at mine with iwconfig I see the "Link Quality Signal level Noise
level" line with real data in it not all 0.  Like below:  Also note
"Mode Managed" which I think is the one to use for connecting a mobile
system to an access point.
