I had that happen once a while back when the mp3 decoder and libs were compiled for an older cpu arch type than I was running. Everything was compiled against arch=i386 on a P4 and when that machine was upgraded to an Intel Core based cpu the mp3s played faster.

Updating all of the mp3 libs fixed it. If I remember correctly I compiled from source.

I just installed latest Ubuntu and it sounds like mp3's play slightly
too fast. What settings would cause that?
