See? These are constraints you didn't indicate in the original question.

You can get a very small DVD player for under $100, complete with screen.

I imagine you could. I've seen video-to-firewire widgets in the Apple
Store.  DVD-player-to-widget-to-laptop ought to work.

Simpler to get a mac. It's unix, y'know.
