Yep, but maybe the only way to win is not to play that game, eh? I do
think playing do-it-their-way has got to be demotivating to creative
people.
Define "win". Producing a functional open-source tool is a win, by
itself. Now, is "win" converting all the Photoshop users to Gimp?
Perhaps, perhaps not.
The best way to displace the entrenched is to be more responsive than
what you are trying to displace. That requires that the entrenched also
make a misstep--like Microsoft with Internet Explorer. By letting IE
stagnate, they gave the possibility for Firefox to capture share.
I wonder: could you say that a FOSS version of a high-learning curve
tool might even have an advantage in capturing market. I suppose that's
one reason why _they_ (practically) give away student versions of the
pricey stuff?
Bingo. Once you climb the learning curve, you're not likely to switch.
