Yeah, well, Linus doesn't believe in silly things like "synchronous
mounting" so that your filesystem doesn't wind up in pieces when it
doesn't get to unmount cleanly.
Most of his complaints about performance concern read performance. The
'stat' call on Linux is about 1,000 times faster than something equivalent
under Windows.
I wasn't aware that Linus liked thrashed filesystems? ext2/3 have had
fairly conservative write caching for quite some time.
I'm not sure of any filesystem that can handle a vmware bug deciding to
replace large chunks of the disk image with garbage :-) (As I grumble).
