Is losing DNS common in such an environment?
Probably. Isn't DNS sent on UDP? Consequently, it doesn't have a
retransmit. So, given the packet loss you're seeing, it's likely that a
UDP packet will get dumped every now and then and the DNS timeout will
have to fire.
