At least for the two different Thinkpads that I have had my hands on,
changing the clock battery was only slightly more difficult than
upgrading the RAM.  In fact, you just open the door and unplug the RAM
chips and there is the clock battery beneath them.  Written from
memory without opening either the computer or its hardware manual.
