In what way doesn't gnome-terminal handle smart quotes? That really
sounds like a big bug. I'd report that.

That sure looks like UTF-8 to me.
Given this is Fedora, you are likely to have a LANG or LOCALE variable
of "en_US.UTF-8" or similar somewhere around. Set that to "C" and see
if it works.

Ayup, it's under LANG. export LANG="C" ought to fix that.
As a side benefit, "ls" sorting should go back to the way it should be.

Sure. Unicode variable names are certainly desirable for people who
don't speak English.

Hah. I've been looking for a decent terminal emulator for years. Let
me know if you find one. I tend to use rxvt not because it's good, but
because it's relatively minimal..
