In what way doesn't gnome-terminal handle smart quotes? That really sounds like a big bug. I'd report that.

That sure looks like UTF-8 to me.

Given this is Fedora, you are likely to have a LANG or LOCALE variable of "en_US.UTF-8" or similar somewhere around. Set that to "C" and see if it works.

Ayup, it's under LANG.  export LANG="C" ought to fix that.

As a side benefit, "ls" sorting should go back to the way it should be.

Hah. I've been looking for a decent terminal emulator for years. Let me know if you find one. I tend to use rxvt not because it's good, but because it's relatively minimal..
