I've got no qualms with games, but to date all AI has been narrow (including game AI) and therefore not the kind of AI that I've always been interested in, which has recently been dubbed AGI in order to distinguish it. More on this in my upcoming response to Lan's message. There are pros and cons to doing AI in games. I'm probably only aware of a few of them. A pro is that you have a potentially complex and interesting environment in which to test out your AI ideas. A con would be that the #1 goal is going to be playability as opposed to general purpose intelligence, maximum performance, etc. Virtual worlds are another substrate that AI researchers are looking to develop on top of. They more open ended than games and they immediately introduce the very difficult problems of natural language parsing, spatial reasoning, socializing and more. -Chuck -- [email protected] http://www.kernel-panic.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/kplug-lpsg
