I am not new to Linux... though I think this question is fairly newbie-esque. =)

I have set-up syslogd to receive messages from remote hosts to centralize my logs on one server. Mainly for routers and switches at this point.

I am running Fedora Core release 3 (Heidelberg)
Kernel 2.6.9-1.667smp

I have setup my switches to send the logs to the proper host and have set the facility to local6.

In syslog.conf I setup local6.* to write to the file /usr/local/logs/core-switches. OOHH NOOO ... syslogd cannot write to this file. When I change the target file to /var/log/core-switch it works fine.

WHY?

If someone can explain to me why... I would greatly appreciate it.

Also... I run strace to see what is going on and I can send the results if anyone would like to see them.

Thanks,

Justin Black
