I don't want to discourage you from your plan, but this list excels at
offering alternatives, so ...

If you have a retired PC desktop, you could start with that. Linux tends
to get a lot out of old hardware, giving it new life. You can build up
experience, find which distro fits you, have a little fun in a
non-expensive environment. Meanwhile, you can gather input about
Linux on laptops.

It's an option.
