It's kind of traditional to conduct private business off the normal email list. Not that there's anything wrong with "finding" each other via the list, of course. It's not a huge impact here, but if you were on a mail list with thousands of subscribers, you would be starting to eat up a measurable amount of collective cpu, memory, and bandwidth with communications of no particular interest to anybody but you two. Everybody slips up, now and then -- I caught myself doing the same thing just a couple of weeks ago. Anyway, please remember to switch to off-list when appropriate.
