There are quite a few resources available online http://www.python.org/doc/ has a somewhat extensive "Tutorial" (by Guido van Rossum). But that could be too much at once for some, so .. see next remarks. The "Beginner's Guide to Python" link takes you to a page devoted to the subject, and has links to a bunch of other resources.
