I'm finally switching myself to Firefox from Mozilla and have an issue
with the URL bar (the field where I type in the URL). Under Mozilla, I
was able to set the behavior to automatically fill in the URL after
typing in only a few characters. The URL would fill in as well as
provide me a drop down list of possible selections. So if I were to type:
www.go
the URL bar would fill in:
www.google.com
with the ogle.com part highlighted in blue.
Under Firefox (1.5.0.9), it no longer completes the URL and I have to
use the drop down list to get my selection. The configuration option for
this is also missing. How do I get that functionality back?
To answer my own question, it helps to have the right terminology.
Looking at the old Mozilla, it was called the Location bar in the
preferences, but underneath it all it was actually called the urlbar.
Doing a search on Google turned up some notes in the Mozilla
knowlegebase, which pointed me to the method needed.
It turns out that I had to add an entry to the Firefox configuration.
This is done by typing "about:config" in the urlbar, then right clicking
the resulting page. Select "New->boolean" from the popup menu, then
entering "browser.urlbar.autoFill" for the new item and then setting its
value to true.
It also turns out there is no way to delete a setting from the
"about:config" selection. When I made a typo, I had to find the prefs.js
file and hand edit it to delete the bad entry.
