There should be two installfests in March, one at That Technical Bookstore and the other in National City. These are wonderful opportunities to bring machines in and get competent assistance with just such problems.
Now ... at some point in a RH install you get asked if you want a default desktop or a custom job. I always ask for custom (and always use "text") so that's what I know. But if you accept the default desktop, I *believe* RH takes care of the rest. Partitions, formats, sets up the file system, the whole enchilada.
