Two clarifications [my post got sent prematurely while I was checking to
see if others had responded]
When I said "it" can get in the way, I meant the protections Linux uses to
keep us from hosing our computers. One could have inferred that I meant
'su' got in the way. Not so.
And I looked up NTFS-3g (Google Is Your Friend) and immediately discovered
that this is in fact a project (and resulting driver) under Linux to make
the NTFS file system usable there.
