I know there have been many changes on my system, including yum updates
(almost always up to date). So I don't know why it no longer works like
this:
In camera setup: Choose USB Mode = PC
Turn off camera
Hook up USB cable
Turn camera on
(camera then turns itself off, into upload mode)
Linux happily reports~: Hey, new fotos, snarfing...

The last step is no longer happening. :(

I dumped to a file the output from dmesg before turning on the hooked-up
camera. After turning it on (and it shutting down into its upload
mode), I dumped to another file the output from dmesg. Doing diff, I
get this:
$ diff ./dmesg ./dmesg2

So it's definitely out there, but no longer automatically fetching the
fotos. :(

Any ideas?

Did you perhaps manually set it yourself to STOP doing that?
I think there was some discussion here a while ago about dialogs that
say "do this from now on", but don't <sigh>.

I know that was annoying me -- I usually do NOT want to do anything
automatically -- especially something like moving (or even copying)
files around!

Anyway somebody posted a link for how to fix that,

http://linuxtnt.blogspot.com/2007/07/turning-off-ubuntugnomes-annoying-photo.html

Maybe you did that?
Or maybe you want to recheck the settings described there.

If I did that, it was by accident. I *like* the automatic popup upon camera hook-up.

I may have been mistaken about the "automatic download". IIRC, it just automatically came up with a dialog which asks where I want to copy them and whether or not I want to merely copy them or move them from the camera.

If I hook up a camera, what else would I want to do with it?! I like that I didn't have to go looking for something to download the fotos. I like that I hook up the camera, and the PC presents me with the appropriate popup.

I've only done it a couple of times, several months ago. Memory of it is hazy. I must have changed something unwittingly. Now, I want it back.

I checked out your link tho. He tells how to shut the automatic off. I figure I may be able to use the same steps to turn it on (or see if it thinks it already is).

Choosing System => Preferences => Hardware => Removable Drives and Media, I get a dialog informing me 'Volume management not supported. The "hald" service is required but not currently running. ...'.

I don't know what turned "hald" off. I don't even know what "hald" IS.

I go System => Administration => Services and it doesn't even list "hald" tho "haldaemon" looks like it might be related. And "haldaemon" has a check mark in the box indicating that it is supposed to be running in this runlevel (5), but Status says "hald is stopped". I clicked on Restart and got a popup indicating success, and Status says "hald (pid 29555) is running...". So, why would hald stop running? Is it something I did? uptime says it's been up for 9 days. But I don't remember even having been aware of hald before now. Can it stop itself?

Despite having restarted haldaemon and Status reporting that hald is running, and checking that the Removable Drives and Media is set to load them, still, nothing happens.

I'm going to go ahead and send this off so I can reboot. I don't care to piddle with varying degrees of restarts. Rebooting should reset everything back to bootup defaults.
