Mostly they are cheap commodity items. So what I have is anti-recommendations.
Be sure to get USB2.0 not the older slower speed. Hubs seem to come
4-port and 7-port. Avoid flimsy
input connecting cables.
If you are attaching things that draw significant power from the USB
bus, like small disk drives, get a hub with its own power supply.
Look at the physical layout of the connectors. Some USB hubs are so
small that the connector spacing does not allow two memory sticks
side-by-side.
Really small hubs also have the problem that they get pushed around a
lot by the cables that are connected to them. Sort of the tail
wagging the dog.
At Fry's they have at least a 4-foot wide display section of USB
gadgets, all varieties.
