I'm no expert on VirtualBox either, and, you're right, it probably isn't
supposed to remove x-window-server.  Actually, I don't blame VirtualBox.
I've had it in here for a couple of weeks and this is the first time I
tried to adjust the resolution in one of the guests.

I installed VirtualBox because I like to try different distros and have
never figured out how to set aside some partitions or lvm for that.
VirtualBox is not great, but it is OK.  You get a better idea of how
something works without the time-lag that comes with live CDs.
