Jim and all,

Good questions!

1. Yes it is a work environment for which I am the NetAdmin - almost all
Windows based. There are these 2 Linux boxes - already in place.
2. The Linux boxes run: ClamAV, Postfix and SpamAssassin(I think?). One is the
primary, the other a backup.
3. Being the email gateway(s), they are mission critical - hence the
Primary/Backup. But one can go down for upgrading while the other runs on.
4. The Primary is a 1U Intel based rack mounted server - P4 CPU (don't know
speed) and 1GB RAM. The Backup is an Intel tower with A P4-3GHz CPU and 512MB
Ram. Don't know how to find other services running/specs...

..jumping in with a sidelines-suggestion:

David, you are asking for advice in what seems like a business
environment. Perhaps it would be wise to describe the environment a bit
more, before some inappropriate recipe leads you into bad places.

You said, as I recall, that you "inherited" the server, and your byline
contains "Network Administrator"..

1. Is it correct to infer that in your normal job-duties you inherited
the primary responsibility for maintaining a server already in-place,
and already functioning?

2. Just what is the purpose of the server? Exactly what services are
running? I guess this has already been covered, but was it covered
thoroughly? Load and/or traffic may be significant -- the people who are
already helping would know more about those details than I do.

3. What is the importance of the server function to business operations?
If this is a mission-critical component, the suggestions may be
different than if this is a utility function that wouldn't sink the
company if it went away for a week.

4. What are the server particulars. Pardon, if this was already covered,
but perhaps it would be good to (re-)collect together this info. What is
the hardware (generally: for example, chassis-type, cpu, memory, disk,
network)? OS? You said Fedora 6 and gave the clam version -- it may be
worth noting versions of other services.

Regards,
..jim
