My current question is about USB mass storage devices and linux.

Thanks everyone for your posts. I learned a bit from each of you. A little clarification about what I have
TS7200 linux board
Redboot loads the kernel
then init starts up one of two root file systems
   TS-linux, which uses busybox
   or
Debian 2.4.?? on a 512 MB compact flash card

The replies from Gus and Neil were perfect for helping out with this board

I am currently booting into Debian, but the file system seems to not be set up properly. First of all, the file system is expecting a HW clock that doesn't exist, so it thinks the date is Dec 31, 1969 until I log on and tell it otherwise. One consequence is that everything in /dev is dated Dec 31, 1969 with only one or two exceptions. I think that I really need to get my clock set up at startup, in other words the in /etc/rcS.d . When I read Neil's post, I did find the files for all the other things that I am not managing to use in /etc/rc2.d .

I decided that I would have more confidence changing things in the boot process if I managed to back up my CF card first. I decided to tar the root directory to a USB drive. I tried two different drives last night, but could not find the file in the /dev directory so that I could mount it. Each of these drives will successfully mount on my desktop machine that runs Kubuntu. Is there something obvious that I am missing? What directory would you look in to find a recently enumerated USB mass storage device?

I think that I am going to have to work with technical support, to get this working properly.

Cheers,
Marieke
