I use Ubuntu 8.04 on a compaq presario v3000. I think I have picked up

Viruses and other malware are rare in linux.
Perhaps there's another explanation for what you are observing. Can you
be a little more specific about the symptoms, and also the history
leading up to the problem?
By tool bar, do you mean a toolbar in some application such as firefox?
Or perhaps you really meant the panel at the bottom (or top) of the
screen? Don't ask why it's called "panel" -- I never learned that! :-)
And "Names on the toolbar" .. would that be the "Window List" of open
applications. If so, you may have inadvertently removed the Window List
applet from the panel? Or perhaps you have switched to another "Desktop"
that has no open applications -- so no window buttons show up there?
Awaiting more information...

The problem is on the top "panel." When the machine boots the panel is
there with the Firefox and Thunderbird icons. The words "Applications,
Places and System" are missing. Since this is all gui, I don't know how
to do anything on the command line or even how to get to a terminal.
Could this be a problem in the boot commands?
