Neil,
 
I ran a google search on "VT6102 + Linux problems"
and I saw various peoples posts about their problems
This does seem to be a common issue
 
What I dont understand is that FED 6 & 7 & 9 worked on this machine
perfectly before  (8 never worked because it didnt recognize my SATA hard drive)
 
Now after loading CentOS 5.2 
FED 9 doesnt work anymore

I will try the NIC card replacement experiment 
and send the results this evening.
