As some of you may know, KPLUG has recently been deprived of a venue for the KLPUG monthly meetings due to state budget constraints/mismanagment.
I regret to report that we are also in danger of losing the NCAS location for the monthly installfests for the same reason. I coordinate the installfests for the National City Adult School through the weekly Linux class I teach on Saturdays from 8:30am to 12:30pm. The district previously counted the number of students in the class as the number of students signed in. They have just informed me that, effective this semester, they are counting the number of students enrolled. The enrollment ratio they are looking for is 23 students per instructor. At present, we have about 5 of those who attend regularly actually enrolled for the current semester. If the numbers for enrollment do not improve significantly this Saturday and through the following week, the class will probably be cancelled. This means the loss of a prime location for the Installfests. We do still have the one at thattechnicalbookstore, but I think most agree that it would be a shame to lose the facility at NCAS due to lack of participation. Given the trouble we had getting this thing restarted the last time we lost it, it will be much harder to get back than to maintain, particularly since the current principal is not as enthusiastic about Linux as the last one was. He's not unfriendly, just not enthusiastic. This is a shameless plea for enrollees. The enrollment fee is $20 per student, per semester. The current semester runs until June 6, 2009. If you want the installfests at NCAS to continue, if you want to have access to a Linux class covering Fedora, SuSE, and Ubuntu, currently being re-mapped to the LPI certification objectives rather than Comptia, we need to get the numbers up. We may be able to get by with lower numbers(say 20 rather than 23), and I am hopeful that several of those who attend will choose to enroll. But if a significant increase between this Saturday and next is not seen, the class will cease to be, and there is no telling when, or if, it will be reinstated. I realize that NCAS is not in the most central location for it, but if KPLUG and LPSG are unable to find another venue where they can hold regular meetings or to make presentations, NCAS would also be available for that on Saturdays too, perhaps as a temporary solution, but only if there is a class there. Thanks for listening, please pass this on to anyone you think might be interested in attending a weekly Linux class on Saturday morning, 8:30-12:30, at National City Adult School, 512 Mile of Cars Way, 91950. It's right next to the 24th Street Trolley Station, accross the street from Denny's and In 'n' Out. -- KPLUG-Newbie@kernel-panic.org http://www.kernel-panic.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/kplug-newbie
