As of today, total enrollment is up to twelve students. We are still a
few short. We will have enrollment forms in the classroom Saturday.
The more actual enrollments we get Saturday, the less convincing the
district will need to keep the thing going in the following weeks. If
you are able and interested, please enroll and help us keep the class
open and the Installfests available at NCAS. The fee is $20 for the
semester. As long as we can get enough enrolled students to show up
for the first two or three sessions, I am prepared to be flexible as
far as other commitments after that. Sign the class attendance sheet
at the installfests and stay for a doughnut or a coke after that, and
it will keep the average attendance high enough to keep the room
available.
I'll keep you posted.

P.S.
For the newbies who are just getting started, I have been told by the
district that we can only pursue the LPI prep if we also include
material for absolute beginners. This is apparently part of some new
initiative to get more entry-level Linux coverage in the Adult
schools. That's the rumor. On the good side, it means that Linux is
finally getting looked at by the district. On the bad, it will likely
slow down the migration to a pure LPI prep course. However, since I
need to to it to satisfy the requirements, I will be covering the
Linux desktop applications along with the LPI stuff early in the
course. I plan to cover GIMP, InkScape, Scribus, OpenOffice.org,
Kompozer, and Dia for sure. Depending on how things go and overall
interest, I might also to a very basic look at Blender, and Pov-RAY.
After that, we will cover how to set up Apache/SSL, MySQL, Postfix,
vsftp, SSH, VNC, Samba, and CUPS. If you just want to learn Linux and
don't care about LIP certification, the course is ready for you now.
If you are looking for an LPI prep course, be patient, the remapping
is in progress and we are on schedule for May 31st to have the LPIC-1
portion completed, including the updated objectives from LPI.
