I have used the script method. Its not bad and it takes affect across most apps you would run in Gnome. Which is nice benefit. If you are looking for that, do the script. However if you really only want it for your browser I would recommend installing the Google toolbar (presuming you run Firefox). The toolbar is smart enough to catch mail links and open the gmail compose window.
