alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

What have I failed to do here?

Check the permissions on the various sound devices. Likely they are
root:audio. Make sure that yo are in the audio group. You may need to
log out and log back in again if you have to add yourself to the audio
group.

On my Debian 5.0 system I have the following alsa devices:

/dev/adsp
/dev/audio
/dev/dsp
/dev/mixer
/dev/rtc0
/dev/sequencer
/dev/sequencer2
/dev/snd/controlC0
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0c
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
/dev/snd/pcmC0D1c
/dev/snd/pcmC0D2c
/dev/snd/pcmC0D3c
/dev/snd/pcmC0D4p
/dev/snd/seq
/dev/snd/timer

-john

Thanks John,

You have solved my problem and also a few others. I was almost
totally ignorant of groups. Now I can omit the totally.

Tom
