We (KPLUG) have got to decide whether we are really interested in
participating in That Technical Bookstore's installfests. They
(TTBookstore) have got to decide how they can advertise and hold an
installfest if nobody comes to help.

I go to installfests because I am interested in helping people. But
there is a limit to that.

Today I essentially had to run an installfest all by myself. Paul
duPre was there as backup help but his technical knowledge is not real
great. There were some failures and a few successes among 6 to 8
"customers". Successes included diagnosis of a broken (but brand new)
disk drive, which was replaced by the store where it was bought.
Failures included any attempt to install FC4 on a Sony VAIO desktop,
which was running FC2. Apparently the Linux kernel that is used in
the RAMdisk initial installation panics when run on that hardware.
Partial success included updating a couple of systems over the
network, after discovering that one of them was initially not able to
resolve network addresses. A busy day was had by some.

As a side issue, somebody who understands networking setup really well
should try to convince the bookstore that their network is not working
correctly, and fix it. Their wired network sometimes does not send
"gateway" information to a DHCP client. Their wireless network seems
to advertise itself as a DNS server, but it isn't. And it does not
forward DNS requests to some other nameserver.
