Steering group people may know that I nave been promising and threatening some rework of the KPLUG wiki.
Well, I've finally got something to show. - there's a new FrontPage. -- with a brief but highly visible pointer directing new-wiki-folk to a very elementary "what is this" type of page (WikiIntro), which has been acclaimed by my consulting editor (bsack). -- with only a few (3) smallish major visual divisions, each of which directs people to other places, the new FP (FrontPage) should be less intimidating and give a simpler overview of what's where, or at least that's the intent. There is certainly room for improvement! -- the old big list of unorganized links has been mostly redistributed into 2 major places pointed to from the FP: LinuxAnswers and SiteGuide. Those 2 pages (LA & SG) are just a first step at making it easier for users to find things, but I feel that they are no worse than the old non-organization, and contain promise by virtue of aiming for a "roadmap" concept (from Wards Wiki) of collecting (and annotating) links under categories. I have taken some trouble to ensure that every old link occurs somewhere on one or _more_ of the new roadmap pages/blocks. I think this is somewhat similar to the Topic Map buzzword going around. Anyway I think it is important to emphasize that there are many routes to some destination page, and the roadmap collections strike me as being a good way to discover things. -- some of the questions of how to contribute have been better addressed by pages WikiBasics (which may be pretty good, I think) and WikiEditing (which needs work) I hope the wiki will be found more comfortable for people to use. I believe that the wiki idea has not yet begun to reveal its power. Regards, ..jim PS: === If anyone wishes to spend a few hours in volunteer work now and then, one of the biggest payoffs, I think, will come from working on the LinuxAnswers and SiteGuide pages. Pay special attention to reconciling duplicate/similar/conflicting pages, combining and splitting pages, and creating (empty, placeholder) pages that suddenly jump out as obviously needed by virtue of just seeing the groups of pagelinks. You may wish to also read (and improve) the suggestions on the RoadMap page. OK, ignore the above if it doesn't make sense, but _do_ consider helping. As always, questions and suggestions are always welcome. === ..j -- [email protected] http://www.kernel-panic.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/kplug-steer
