Frys today has an ad for a projector

  Optoma EP727 DLP
  1400x1050
  2200:1 contrast
  2200 Lumens
$650 (with "instant savings", but no rebate hassles)

looking up specs elsewhere shows
  2000:1 contrast
  1024x768

the company specs
  http://www.optomausa.com/Product_detail.asp?product_id=338
say
  Resolution Native XGA (1024 x 768)
  Maximum Resolution UXGA (1600 x 1200) Resized
   [jgs:whatever that means]
  Brightness (Typical) 2200 Lumens
and the rest of the specs look decent (to me)
Oh,
Lamp Life and Type Estimated at 2000/3000 Hours (STD/ECO) 180W UHP
prices (elsewhere) seem about $300 !!
I suspect that after 2000 hours, a new projector
may be more inviting than a replacement lamp, so I am
of the opinion that a spare bulb is not wise investment.
Besides, who knows whether we will still have electricity
after 2000 hours of use? ;-)

Of course the scary thing about projectors, is that there is never any
spec on optical quality. :-(

I don't think I have ever heard of Optoma, but this is the first time I
remember seeing anything better than 800x600 in this price range.

Anyway, this price is good through Tuesday.
Does anyone think we ought to get one of these to avoid
a) meetings in projectorless rooms
b) backup -- eg, failure of house-projector

Regards,
..jim
