Biggest problem: what model do I want?

I haven't used shopping.google -- have you (or anybody)?

First impressions: it's not so good if you don't know a specific model
or can't specify a good toplevel search criterion (there seems to be no
refinement capability.

Some of the other links in my "shopping" bookmarks have a more
accurate(!) search than google, and some have nice stepwise refinement
capabilities. One focuses on alerts of time-sensitive special pricing.

http://www.pricescan.com ..
http://stores.tomshardware.com/
http://dealnews.com/ .. I subscribe to alerts from this one
http://www.dealsites.net/ .. haven't really tried this one
http://www3.dealtime.com/
http://octopart.com/ .. haven't tried; looks inviting for nuts&bolts
http://www.pricegrabber.com/ .. really nice drill-down capabilities
http://www.pricewatch.com/

vendors good to watch:
  http://www.newegg.com/
  http://frys.com/ (used to be outpost.com)

more links:
  http://www.google.com/Top/Home/Consumer_Information/Price_Comparisons/

(Heh) I know you didn't ask for this info, I was just in the mood to
post some bookmarks. :-)

..jim
