One item in the "pile of junk" was a PCMCIA modem. I ordered a dongle to connect it to the phone line on the 13th, and it arrived today; I no longer need to worry about my external modem. Which means I don't need to haul around the fragile, bulky external modem, and I also don't need to haul around its heavy, bulky power supply or the fiddly, bulky serial cable that goes with it. All in all, a win.
