That's really excellent that these carbs will continue to be available.
Although I don't normally use car gas in the plane, I have done so
without problem with the EFS-2. Mark once mentioned that he or a friend
of his has a jar full of mogas with the Ellison diaphram sitting in it,
for years, without any deterioration. Rotec states their carb is
compatible with mogas, implying the Ellison isn't . . . plus I think on
the EFS site it says something about the carbs being designed for avgas
only . . . but the Ellison seems to be fine with car gas. On the rare
occasion when I have put car gas in the plane, I've used Chevron Supreme
- which does contain alcohol even though I once thought it didn't. I
called Chevron up in San Francisco and the fellow said it has 8% ethanol
but that probably varies with the season.
Steve Bennet used ethanol-free car gas in this plane but back in Nebraska
you can still find it. Not here in California though . . .although
ethanol-free racing fuel is probably available if I were to search
harder. No need though.
On the times I've put Chevron in the tank I've noticed the engine has a
little more power with avgas. Could be my imagination but I'm pretty
sure avgas has more energy in it by volume.
Anyway, great news for everyone that Steve is putting time and resources
into keeping the Ellison design going.
I was just thinking back . . . I bought this plane from Steve in 2006 and
in all that time I've never had to touch/adjust/fiddle in any way with
the carb. Whether at sea level or at 14.5 (the highest I've flown it) it
just works.
I also ought to mention that when I re-did the heads a few years ago the
coloration on the pistons were very uniform, a very light tan. In
combination with Steve's (Great Plains) manifold I'm getting really nice
fuel distribution among the four cylinders. One couldn't ask for a more
trouble-free and dependable engine/carb for powering a KR.
