Minn. DNR adds 6 new Fire Boss airplanes to aerial firefighting fleet

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has added six new single-seat
Fire Boss airplanes to its aerial firefighting fleet. The agency formerly had
two 1950s Bombardier CL-215 airplanes but it was becoming increasingly
difficult to find parts to maintain them. Dry, windy conditions across the
state have resulted in an increase in wildfires; DNR Wildfire Suppression
Supervisor Ron Stoffel said crews had responded to 50 or 60 different fires
last Thursday alone. The Forum (Fargo, N.D.-Moorhead, Minn.) (free registration)

Aviation business teaches customers to convert Corvair automobile engines for
aviation use

For most of his career, Bill Clapp has worked in car restoration while
designing and building airplanes was a hobby. Two and a half years ago, he
opened Azalea Aviation, offering engines taken from Chevrolet Corvairs and
converting them to be used in airplanes. The company will also teach customers
how to convert a Corvair engine themselves. The Valdosta Daily Times (Ga.)

Private-public partnership spurs growth at Fort Worth Alliance Airport

Since Fort Worth Alliance Airport in Texas opened in 1989, thanks to a
partnership among the city, the Federal Aviation Administration and Ross Perot
Jr.'s Hillwood real estate investment firm, the airport has been growing. It
has added a rail terminal, an aviation learning center and buildings that house
call centers and retail offices. The 18,000-acre airport also has had a $55
billion economic impact on the region, said Tom Harris, president of Alliance
Air/Aviation Services. AOPA Online

Irked by slow FAA, Amazon tests UAVs in Canada

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has been slow to approve unmanned
aerial vehicle research by Amazon.com, writes columnist L. Gordon Crovitz,
noting that the company was able to complete testing in Canada on one model and
move on to another before the FAA gave its permission for testing to begin in
the U.S. "The FAA treats [UAVs] the way the government once treated the
Internet when it banned commercial use," writes Crovitz. The Wall Street

Prince Harry marks anniversary of aviation scholarship for injured servicemen
with Spitfire flight

To mark the anniversary of a scholarship he launched to teach two injured
servicemen to fly Spitfires, Prince Harry took a 45-minute flight in a Spitfire
himself. The scholarship came from the prince's Endeavour Fund, which was
inspired by a World War II pilot who flew despite not having legs. The two
scholarship recipients are expected to join a fly-by to commemorate the 75th
anniversary of the Battle of Britain on Sept. 15, Harry's birthday. The Express
