My landing lights have been buried under electrical tape, duct tape, Super-Fil, Aeroxpoxy Light, and micro for years now, but I exumed them a few weeks ago (see http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/03041807m.jpg ). The distortion in the middle of the plexiglas was caused by my kids turning on the landing lights (and leaving them on) while I was hosting the recent get-together here. The black electrical tape, and total lack of airflow, over a period of hours, was enough to melt the plexiglass and make it bubble up into a mess. So I'm seriously considering just glassing over these things and building a landing light that deploys out of the bottom of the fuselage, and acts as a belly flap at the same time. This would have the advantage of being easily adjustable and would provide simple bulb replacement, something that I don't have now. I was going to cut access panels into the bottom of the wing to change the bulbs and adjust the lights, but now I'm thinking that the flip-down light will be the ticket. But that's another few pounds I'm carrying around for no reason. I don't know if you've seen it or not, but I detailed how I made these landing light covers throughout my stub wing page, at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/swings.html . One thing I was disappointed at was that I neglected to clean up where I'd cut the skin. It's pretty ugly in there. I'd have been tempted to glass over them anyway, without the melted plex. What I MAY do (in the interest of getting in the air soon) is leave these here (I have two, one for taxiing, one for landing attitude) just to get certified, and then cut them out and glass over them later, moving them to the flip-down thing, or maybe just redoing them in place, with plex covers that fit flush. One more reason not to paint it until way after I'm flying and happy with everything... Mark Langford, Huntsville, AL mailto:[email protected] see KR2S project at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford
