I am planning on keeping mine outside also. I asked for input a few weeks ago and I haven't been able to find anyone else that has kept one outside.
I am having a cover made for mine. I will probably have them make it out of a material called Sunbrella. That is a common material for car covers and some of the aircraft cover manufacturers use it also. It is supposed to be UV blocking, it is light weight, and it has a backing that should not scratch the paint. I am having socks made for the wings, socks for the prop and one or more odd shaped sections for the rest of the plane. The canopy cover will have straps that tie around the bottom of the plane. I am having the canopy cover made in a separate piece so that I can use it with the full cover at my airport or so I can leave the rest of the cover home when I travel and just carry the canopy and prop covers with me when I travel and use them separately. I will probably have sections velcro together or tie with straps. I am avoiding snaps and zippers. I have two local upholstery/canvas shops giving me quotes. I haven't done a complete drawing of what I want yet, but they are saying around $800.00 now. I did check all of the regular aircraft cover manufacturers and saw a few at Sun-N-Fun, but none of them had patterns for a KR2. I can let you know how things work out and give you contact information for whichever one I use, but the plane isn't going to the airport for another two to three weeks so I won't have any experience to give to you for probably a few months. -------Original Message------- From: [email protected] Sent: 07/24/03 01:42 AM To: [email protected] Subject: KR>Keeping my Finished KR-2S on an Outside Tie Down > > I am purchasing a partially complete KR-2S and was thinking when it was finished that I would store it outside, covered on a tie down. The location would be Corona, CA which is in southern california with fairly stable temperatures, and not very much rain. I was going to make a complete cover for it. Tie Downs at Corona AJO can be obtained for $30 per month, and hangers generally run around $300 per month. There has been a glassair out there for several years with no cover and seems to have faired fairly well. Was just looking for input, I am planning on flying it quite often, and may actually dismantle it in winter time and garage it. However it would probably never get below 45 degrees in the winter time, but we do get some short but heavy rain.
