Bill,

The tach on my Renegade has a 1000 ohm resistor between the ignition system and
the tachourmeter. If the tach were to go to a dead short, the ignition system
would never know it.

The tach on my KR is a capacitor pickup--the lead is wrapped for two turns
around one of the spark plug wires. Yes, it does work with shielded plug wires.

Most solid state tach have been designed so they can't interfere with the
engine spark.
