Netters,

Based on some questions that have been asked of me off list regarding IFR
required equipment I discovered that the FAA has done something GOOD for us.
Their web site has a great search engine that will allow you to quickly find
the particular FARs that apply to your immediate subject of interest. Take
a look at:
http://www.airweb.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgFAR.nsf/MainFram
e?OpenFrameSet.
On the left side at the top there is a search box. Put in your keyword in
my case it was pitot and I found all the places in the regs that pertain to
pitot. From that I was able to quickly find the reference to pitot heat
being required for IFR operations. It's under 23.1323(d) which states if
your airspeed system is going to be used for IFR or Known Icing you must
have pitot heat. As a result of the search, I also discovered a new
requirement 23.1326 (March 1996), that there must be an annunciator for the
pitot heat to warn the pilot if it is off or burned out.

This leads me to conclude that one of the things we should do before we
apply for certification is to review the appropriate section of FAR Part
91.205, Powered civil aircraft with standard category U.S. airworthiness
certificates required equipment. Then for each piece of equipment that we
have installed or is required we should search the FARs at the link above
for any regulations that might require a change to our KR before
certification.

Since the FARs are a moving target, it will be an iterative process to see
what the regulations are as we build a particular system, as well as what
they might change to by the time we apply for certification. At least now
it's easier to sift through the regulations and find what is of interest in
the FARs.

Regards,

Bob Lee
