I don't know about "best", but I used 5/16", and have no complaints. Don't forget to staple over a nylon cord for easier removal, or even nylon strapping, I've heard, works well for that purpose too. You don't want to have to pry those things out with a screwdriver. I found that the nylon cord only pulls one end up, and then I used pliers to "roll" them the rest of the way out.
