Netheads; When I was racing Formula Vee's (1200cc single port VW), we re-torqued the case and heads adjusted the valves and changed oil between practice, qualifying and race. We'd also read and change plugs, and if necessisary would adjust the jetting. We also would adjust the valves allot tighter than specs, typically .003 intake and .004 exhaust. Once we figured out the internal aerodynamics under the "cowling", we were able to get a full season out of an engine.(as opposed to 3 races). ( we had sky-rocketing oil temps). Re-torqueing the cases and heads also goes a long way in keeping your VW singing it's sweet song.

On the old Beetle, you would adjust the valves every oil change. If you do the adjustment properly and often, you will not have any problems with them.
