This is done when you want an extremely smooth surface, and are not that concerned about weight. Rather than remove excess epoxy (like peel ply) the rigid plastic sheets bridge the humps of the weave and encourage the epoxy to completely fill them. It gives a very smooth surface, with very little extra work, but there are lighter things than epoxy to fill the weave with. Regards, RonB
