Mine did kind of weird things also that made me think it was working, but it
didn't.

I have found both UMA and Westach to have great service.

Subject: KR> UMA VSI

NetHeads,

Last night I removed my UMA VSI. Driving home from the airport, the thing
seemed to work perfectly, indicating even the slightest changes in altitude.
Today on the way to work, I cracked a car window to induce a negative
pressure and it instantly showed a 500 ft/min climb. Messing around with
the window, I could make it read anywhere between plus and minus 500 ft/min,
for a few seconds anyway. When I parked, the thing just sat there on 300
ft/min. I watched it for a couple of minutes, and decided that's certainly
a part of the problem. I called UMA and the guy said "just send it back
with a description of the problem and we'll take care of it". No mention of
payment, so off it goes tomorrow. Nice of 'em! Maybe I should have
returned my altimeter to them too, rather than just buying a new one. It
never hurts to ask.

I bypassed the VSI so tomorrow I'll flight test the "new" static system and
see what I get. I've also hooked up a timer to limit my fuel transfer to
100 seconds (then it shuts off automatically), installed another kind of
air/fuel meter (kluged into the shell of what used to be the worthless Tiny
Tach), and moved the outside air temperature probe out into engine inlet so
it can get an accurate indication (it has been under the cowling recording
temps there). I'll finish it up tonight and fly again on Friday
afternoon...
