Chris I used rod end bearings for the elevator hinge. When I started to install them I looked for some conical washers to use on each side of the bearing because that was what I was used to seeing on the rod ends on helicopter tail rotor pitch change links. The rod ends on the KR elevator will never be subject to the stresses and forces of a tail rotor so I forgot about the conical washers. I have never seen a broken rod end and believe me I have inspected many on preflight and maintenance inspections. We routinely replaced them for normal wear but not for failure. Not saying that they wont fail but I don't think it is anything to worry about on the elevator. I used 5 on my elevator. I should also mention that my KR has never flown.

I would have thought that if enough were used on the control surface, say 6 or 7 for the elevator and four say for the rudder, then failure would not be an option, and what I am told is an old wives tail. > I also want some clarification on hinge bolt holes, the hinge half on the fixed portion of the surface, ie tailplane, has bolt holes diagonally opposing, while on the hinge half fixed to the movable surface, ie elevator, the plans show two bolts separated vertically only, am I correct in what I say, I would like to make doubly sure I am right because it takes ages to get another piece of wood if I drill in the wrong place! Fortunately, I have not had to buy any " other pieces of wood " yet!! > Still deciding, but tend to think the rod end bearing is just far superior to anything else, but keep getting told these bad reports on them. > > > Chris Johnston > > Richmond NSW > Australia. > _______________________________________ > Search the KRnet Archives at http://www.maddyhome.com/krsrch/index.jsp > to UNsubscribe from KRnet, send a message to krnet-le...@mylist.net > please see other KRnet info at http://www.krnet.org/info.html
