I had used 2 x 4 s for the cross members of the table. Mark Langford stated in 199? on his web site to use 2 x6 s for the table and put a good edge on one side for a flush fit with the table top. I ended up chasing dips in my table the entire time I used it. Although I put mine together with 2 1/2" inch screws and could remove frame pieces to adjust.
Just get the table as flat as you can. I hope that answers that.
