If you know in advance that you are going to leave your plane outside while you
are building and getting ready to paint, just make sure you apply the
appropriate UV barrier primer before paint . That was always stressed by Burt
Rutan as a must on a composite aircraft plus White Paint. Take a piece of raw
urethane foam, (rigid or flexible) and lay it outside in the sun for a while.
You will see the foam surface structure fail fairly quickly. Once that surface
barrier deteriorates from high heat or UV, then your fiberglass skin is loose.
I like the PVC foams for wings. Dow Chemical Styrofoam is good also, not the
expanded (bead)polystyrene like a cheap root beer cooler would be made from.
I would definately figure out a way to cover a KR airplane if it were left
outside, limit mother natures destruction of it.

At what point do you decide to recover? Before or
after the wing deliminats. Most of the time the glass
will deliminat on the inside. That is why part of the
new fighters service is a ultrasound of the fiberglass
parts.
