David,

Poly-tak and foam / fiberglass are two different ball games.  It sounds to me
like you are venturing well beyond your knowledge and experience
base and for your own safety you need to step back and ask yourself
why.  You won't gain all the knowledge here on the KRnet that you need to
go the construction route you intend to go.  Self educating and testing
will take you more time than building the fuselage to plans.  Do you
want to build or due you want to fly?  Only you can answer that.  Adventures
like you are about to set out on is one of the main reasons that many
homebuilts never get finished or fly.

If you want to fly, stick closely to plans.  If you want to 
experiment / build, go
for it but do so safely by educating yourself and have a good test plan
to prove any changes you make.  Good luck with whatever decision you
make.
