C'mon Virg.

Lighten up!

If a person puts a stock distributor on an engine......... it's got all the
"advance" provisions that it was designed with available.

Only magnetos, which have no advance mechanism built into them, fall into the
fixed timing trap.

My engine (a Cont 0-200 derivative) will have one mag (fixed timing) and one
electronic ignition system which has full advance capabilities built into it.

It is a system similar to Claus Savors (sp) but built by an outfit in
Chattanooga Tn. By the name of "Electro air".

It sets itself to a retarded position near Top Dead Center for starting, then
with increased RPM and higher altitude, slowly advances out to near 43 degrees.

Most mags have an "advanced" position which is where they are static timed
to..... and then use an impulse coupling to delay firing to aid the engine in
starting by stopping the rotation of the mag until the crank nears Top Dead
Center and then allows the mag rotor to release and "catch up". This gives the
mag a hotter and retarded spark.

Most planes produced in the last 3 or 4 decades have use a mag with an impulse.

Certainly, the newer electronic units are a vast improvement over them.

Especially the ones that can "advance' the timing.
