The gear leg is probably not considered to be a "High Temp" operation despite 
the near proximity of potentially very hot brakes.  I chose to use cotter pins 
on mine for that reason, but as Mark points out, he hasn't seen a problem with 
his either.

The one point I do want to make is that drilled bolts should only be used with 
castellated nuts and cotter pins or safety wire.  The drilled hole creates a 
stress point in the bolt.  I have seen a number of them fail for whatever 
reason when used incorrectly with self locking nuts.  I don't care which way 
you do it, but pair the correct bolts with the correct nuts.

As Sid correctly points out, the AC 43-13 (mechanic's Bible) says it's so, and 
it's for a very good reason.
